What is Dimethicone?

Artificially synthesized silicone-based polymer also termed polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is an ointment that helps to enhance skin softness by locking up the pores present on the stratum corneum of the skin (epidermis).

According to Weinstein, it does not mix with the sebum on the face and is therefore used in those makeup products that give a non-greasy feel.

FDA claims Dimethicone as a skincare agent that helps to relieve irritation and inhibits further damage. It is also referred to as a good emollient as it fills up the cracks of the skin.

Dermatologists refer to the Dimethicone containing products as smoothing agents because it gives the smooth and soft look after filling the pores of the skin and moisturizes it by locking the water inside.

Chemical properties of Dimethicone:

Chemically, Dimethicone is a polymer containing several repeating units of dimethylsiloxane molecule. It is chemically produced by the mixing of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane and hexamethyldisiloxane in the presence of strong sulphuric acid. It is an inert, chemically stable macromolecule that works as a skin-protecting agent.

Physical Properties of Dimethicone:

Dimethicone looks like a colorless transparent (sometimes yellowish) fluid that has no taste and odor. It is a non-toxic liquid that has no irritating reactions when in contact with skin or eyes. Sometimes it appears as a yellowish fluid with variable viscosity.

Origin of Dimethicone:

Even though Dimethicone is extracted from natural silicones, it is regarded as synthetic. It is derived from silicone compounds that exist as viscoelastic compounds. It belongs to the organic polymers of silicones that are used as silicone oil in cosmetic products.

Uses of Dimethicone:

Most commonly it is used as a moisturizer and as a main ingredient in the primers. 2% topical cream serves as a moisturizing ointment that gives the smooth and shiny look of skin.

Dimethicone is considered a skin protectant that retains the water in the top layer of the skin keeping the skin hydrated.

Skin problems like itching, irritation, and rashes as well as dermatitis can be cured by the use of medicated cosmetic products containing Dimethicone. As it gives a smooth appearance to the skin so used in cosmetic products.

It is also employed in shampoo, conditioners, and hair care products for the silky shiny look of hairs as it forms a layer on hair strands. This chemical also protects the hairs from heat. No toxic and poisonous reactions have been reported after the use of Dimethicone-containing products.

Alternatives of Dimethicone:

Several factors lead to the negative perception of customers about the use of silicone-containing products. One of these is the non-biodegradability of silicone compounds.

A large number of silicone alternatives have been available which are being extracted from nature, plants, and other living organisms. Such an alternative of Dimethicone provides the same effective results.

Some of the natural, plant, and bio-based silicone alternatives are Bamboo Extract, Daikon seed Extract, Marula Extract, and Hydrogenated Olive oil.

Cetiol Ultimate is a renewable and nature-based substitute of silicone products that is purified by water and alcohol. Moreover, Cetiol RLF is a mild and sensitive emollient used as a suitable silicone alternative that is dermatologically tested.

Cetiol Sensoft serves as generating positive sensations, is compatible with low pH, and is a good silicone alternative. Cetiol OE is a flexible ointment for both skin and hair used as a substitute for silicone products. It is also used as a makeup remover and for soft smooth skin.

Safety and Storage:

Dimethicone containing cosmetic or hair care products must be store in ventilated areas between 40 and 300. Avoid high temperatures and heat. Moreover, for long storage purposes store it in cool ventilated containers. No proper handling and regulatory precautions are needed.
